First off, I have to say that I love the creativity behind this song because it’s the exact sort of thing I’d write. Something made me think of it while I was searching for today’s entry. I used to have the album and though I didn’t listen the song as often as others, it always stayed with me because I never heard a musician turn a bunch of letters into a song.
I’m a traditionalist when it comes to letters and it’s sad to see that it’s a lost way of communication. I’m especially known for love letters, I can sit down and write 2-3 pages easily. And somewhere, I know atleast two guys who have a collection of them from me.
Unsent was released in March of 1999 from the album, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie. It made #58 on Billboard’s Hot 100. There’s also a demo version which mentions more names & uses the real names of those that were changed for the final recording. “Matthew” refers to singer Dave Matthews, and “Lou” is actually Christian Lane from the band Loud Lucy. The demo version also mentioned “Taylor” which is Taylor Hawkins from Foo Fighters.
