Staind’s third album, Break the Cycle, was one of my favorites in middle school. It’s not so easy to listen to anymore though because a lot of memories come back along with it. However, this song came back to mind two years ago and it reminded me of a guy I knew.
Fade was released on September 4, 2001 as the third single from the album. The band had recently gained fame with their breakthrough hit, It’s Been Awhile. It made #4 on Modern Rock Tracks and #3 on Mainstream Rock.
I just realized that my first paragraph describes the beginning of this song. It talks about how memories are painful. But the song also dives into how people can be so self-consumed and don’t pay attention to others around them. To me personally, this is where I’m reminded of the guy mentioned earlier.
But in Staind’s case, I think it’s referencing a family member from the lyrics, Now I’m older and I feel like I could let some of this anger fade. But it seems the surface I am scratching is the bed that I have made. Something about “older” makes me automatically think of a parent that neglected their child.
Take a listen & see what you make of it…
EDIT: Out of coincidence, I just realized that their new album is out on Tuesday, Sept. 13. Go figure!
