The first single, Smells Like Teen Spirit, quickly became a huge hit and by 1992 the album surpassed Michael Jackson’s on the charts. The video for Smells Like Teen Spirit was also getting heavy rotation on MTV and it won them two awards.
The guys never expected it to be a huge success, no one did. In fact, the United States only received about 50,000 copies when it was first released. However, due to this unexpected huge success, the album was out of stock for days and Geffen put all other albums on hold so they could meet the demands of people waiting to buy the album. By the beginning of 1992, the album was selling 300,000 copies a week. The initial sales estimate Geffen had (prior to release) was a total of 250,000. Nirvana was now everywhere…they were famous..and Geffen was up to their knees in back orders.
The video above is a clip about Nevermind from their episode of Classic Albums. You’ll hear from Dave, Krist, and album producer Butch Vig on making the album.
Happy Birthday, Nevermind. We miss you Kurt.<3
