I can actually remember the first time I heard this song. It was the last year of high school and I was at a friend’s house one afternoon. She was a big 80’s music fan and had a compilation CD playing on her stereo. This song came on, I asked her what it was, and I’ve liked it ever since.
In a Big Country was released in May of 1983 from the album, The Crossing. It was successful on the charts making #3 on Hot Mainstream Tracks and #17 on the Hot 100. In the United States, the song is often described as a One Hit Wonder even though they had continued success in Europe. Frontman Stuart Adamson once stated, “If we’re known for nothing more than that one song, I’d be pretty happy with that.”
Sadly in December 2001, Adamson was found dead in a hotel room from suicide by hanging. An autopsy report revealed that he had a high level of alcohol in his system. He had been struggling with substance abuse and depression for many years.
I can’t help but think about him and what happened whenever I hear the song on the radio. Rest in Peace, Stuart.
