I heard a clip of this song in a video and it seemed so familiar. Today I looked for Queensrÿche on YouTube and this was oddly the first song I picked, turning out to be the right one. Hearing the song in its entirety makes me fairly certain I know it but I haven’t heard it in about 15 years or so.
I don’t know anything about Queensrÿche except that they are Washington natives, hailing from Bellevue. I did some research and discovered they formed in 1981 and have released 11 studio albums. They’ve sold over 20 million albums worldwide and six million in the United States.
Silent Lucidity was released in August of 1990 from their fourth album, Empire. It was a major hit, reaching #1 on Mainstream Rock Tracks and #9 on Billboard’s Hot 100.
The song is about the idea of a lucid dream, a dream you know you’re having while you sleep, giving you the ability to control certain aspects of it. According to songfacts, lead singer Geoff Tate describes the song at concerts saying it’s like a parent watching over their sleeping child and the emotions they feel.
The video is a live MTV performance from 1991.
