You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me by The Miracles.

Another classic music moment from television came to mind for today’s entry. Season 3, episode 23 “Scenes from a Barbeque” from the show, Roseanne.

This episode takes place on Mother’s Day and the Conners are having a cookout. Roseanne’s family and friends are there, including Bonnie, her co-worker at the restaurant in the mall.  This scene is from the end of the episode when Dan (John Goodman) is playing guitar and singing with everyone. They are trying to come up with a song that Roseanne doesn’t know because she’s not a very good singer, haha. Dan starts playing “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me” and Bonnie surprises all of them when she joins in.

If you watched Roseanne, you might remember that Bonnie’s husband was a musician whose band occasionally played at local venues around Lanford. Who was he? None other than David Crosby from Crosby, Stills & Nash. See a clip of him and Bonnie singing in an episode here.

“You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me” was released in 1962 by Smokey Robinson and The Miracles. It’s sometimes written with “You” instead of “You’ve.” It was in the top 10 on Billboard charts. The song is about a man who is so in love with a woman that he can’t leave her even though she treats him badly.
